Fear of Movement Revealed as Arousal of the Nervous System
I've long noticed that people with chronic pain/TMS often exhibit limitation of motion not only from pain, but from FEAR OF MOVEMENT. A recent study in the journal PAIN (March 2015) examined this issue. Physical changes in skin conductance, etc. were demonstrated with attempted movement, consistent with deep physiological fear. This visceral reaction provides evidence for the linkage between emotionally based neural pathways (fear, avoidance) and the limitations of movement associated with chronic pain. As I describe in Think Away Your Pain, one can reverse this process and heal from this condition if the correct diagnosis is Tension Myoneural Syndrome (TMS).
